《三國演義》又名《三國志演義》、《三國志通俗演義》，是我國小說史上最著名最傑出的長篇章回體歷史小說。 《三國演義》的作者是元末明初人羅貫中，由毛綸，毛宗崗父子批改。在其成書前，「三國故事」已經歷了數百年的歷史發展過程。在唐代，三國故事已廣為流傳，連兒童都很熟悉。隨著市民文藝的發展，宋代的「說話」藝人，已有專門說三國故事的，當時稱為「說三分」。元代出現的《三國志平話》，實際上是從說書人使用的本子，雖較簡略粗糙，但已初肯《三國演義》的規模。羅貫中在群眾傳說和民間藝人創作的基礎上，又依據陳壽《三國志》及裴松之注中所徵引的資料（還包括《世說新語》及注中的資料），經過巨大的創作勞動，寫在了規模宏偉的巨著——《三國志通俗演義》全書24卷，240回。後來經過毛綸，毛宗崗父子批改，形成我們現在所見的《三國演義》120回版

由於人文出版社選取的毛批版本和明嘉靖版的《三國志通俗演義》頗有出入，將擁劉抑曹的思想發展到一個幾乎病態的角度，且大量地刪除了原文中贊揚曹操一方人物的詩詞和評論，所以給世人造成一種三國演義打擊曹操、歌頌劉備的錯誤印象，且該批改版將劉備一方無限神化，甚至將諸葛亮准備將魏延燒死在上方谷這樣的情節統統刪除，將諸葛說成是一個完美近乎神人的形象，這是大家閱讀時候值得注意的地方。

由於該版本選用的是毛批改版，而且沒有將毛家父子的批語選入，就會給人造成一種錯覺，認為該版本和毛批本是不相同的，其實本書和毛批本完全一致，不過是刪除了批語部分，加入了編者的注腳。請讀者朋友們閱讀時注意

作者簡介：

羅貫中（約1330—約1400），漢族，名本，字貫中，號湖海散人。山西太原人，一說錢塘（現在浙江杭州）或廬陵（現在江西吉安）人。元末明初著名小說家、戲曲家，是中國章回小說的鼻祖。一生著作頗豐，主要作品有：劇本《趙太祖龍虎風雲會》《忠正孝子連環諫》、《三平章死哭蜚虎子》；小說《隋唐兩朝志傳》《殘唐五代史演義》《三遂平妖傳》《粉妝樓》、和施耐庵合著的《水滸傳》、代表作《三國演義》等。
